Film

Some favourites from my film library

Watching film, thinking about film, and reading and writing about film takes up a big chunk of my non-professional life. This passion pre-dates my undergraduate years but turned into something a bit more serious when I studied under the late Jim Hillier, academic doyen of indie US cinema, for whom I produced a study of serendipity in the work of Jim Jarmusch. Lockdown 2020 gave me a chance to re-watch the entire oeuvre of another of my great film heroes, David Lynch. This included a full revisiting of the Twin Peaks canon and I am currently working on an article which examines TP’s theological import, with particular focus on Buddhist symbolism.

Some examples of my film criticism include:-

Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko (2001)

Todd Phillip’s Joker (2019)

David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992)

Jia Zhangke’s A Touch of Sin (2013)

Steve McQueen’s Shame (2011)
